In 2000 I bought two tanks. The first one is a 68 gallons coral reef, the second one a 20 gallons for marine fish
only.
July
I bought a tank in July, and I was planning for marine fish. But, by the time the tank was cycled I had bought tons
of books on reef tanks and decided I was going to start a reef tank. I have an Aquamedic 1000 hang-on skimmer,
a Cyclone drop-in chiller and a Medusa controller.
September
After cycling, I made my first mistakes. I didn't buy enough live rock, and the live rock was of poor quality
(Florida). I started with a Clown fish, a purple (actually blue) Tang, a longnosed Hawkfish. Then I started to buy a
few corals, an anemone for the Clown fish, and a cleaner shrimp. My original tank equipment was for marine fish,
that's when I bought the chiller and the controller.
October
I decided to buy a blue Maxima clam, and at the same time I added 40 pounds of Fiji live rock, and also
replaced the original one. I replaced the original lights with VHO lights. Within 4 weeks the Maxima clam died, I
didn't understand, as the water parameters were perfect, bought another clam (green). I also tried to introduce a
second Tang (Yellow Tang), but I traveled for business 3 days I introduced it, and when I returned (a friend took
take of everything) the Yellow Tang had disappeared! I bought a second Yellow Tang, and found that the Purple
Tang is very tough against new Tangs. This one died too. So I bought a third one, but this time one and a half
bigger than the Purple Tang. This time it worked.
November
The second clam died, so I started to investigate. I found that clams require very strong light (VHO is not enough),
they need Metal Halide. So I decided I am going to do without a clam.
I decided that I wanted a Clown Triggerfish (one of the most beautiful fish on earth). So I bought a 20 gallons
non reef tank.
December
I bought two beautiful fishes for the reef tank. A pygmy Angelfish and a Marine Betta.
The second tank was cycled, and I bought at the end of December of Clown Triggerfish, a Polka-dot Grouper
(Panther fish), another Triggerfish and a Jewel moray eel.
